Bed time story
Thursday, June 28, 2007

Joen and I have been looking at bed frames and bed posts since we moved in. We found 2 yesterday-- one at Furniture Row and the other at NFM. I've always loved platform beds. My mom had this carpenter make me a platform bed when I was little and if not for the weight wear, it would probably still be around. At least Megan was still able to use it. Hehe.

I like the Japanese-style board of the first one but I like the elegance of the second. It also helps that it already has on the same chocolate brown-blue scheme as we have in Will look for more out there seeing as we need to have a bed installed in the guest room already in time for Ate Joyce's visit this August.

Sprinkler me this, sprinkler me that
Monday, June 25, 2007

Joen wanted to have our yards quoted for a sprinkler system but the guy didn't show up last Saturday morning. He will be coming over tomorrow at 7:30 am. A sprinkler system is always expensive which goes to show how much Joen is already not enjoying the whole sprinkler hose set-up. Hehe.

Sinful day

Lord, sana patawaran po ninyo kami kasi ngayong gabing na ito, nag-baboy kami. 22 grams of fat per sausage po, Lord.

Grilling on a 94 degree weather. Ferpeck!

The mistress
Sunday, June 24, 2007

Hoen got his edger and trimmer. This gadget I consider his mistress. But it's alright. If it can level our grass by the fence, it's fine by me.

*** By the way, do y'all notice how Joen's legs look fairer than his shoes? Hehe

It's not easy being green

FINALLY! We took the tapes off last Friday and we love love LOVE the results!! Sage green is so easy on the eyes. And the heart. Up next, either the kitchen or the Master's Bath. But Hoen wants to tend to his second love first -- the lawn. We'll see.

By the way, thanks to the Jakos in NJ for reminding me to remove the outlet face plates before painting. Hoen kept on reminding but I also kept on forgetting. Hehe.

Hoen and I have this motto. "Never stop moving." We swore never to be stagnant, still or sedentary ('cept for work) and this we have been doing together for the past 2 years. However, yesterday Sunday, we took it a tad bit too far.

We:

Hit the gym
Went to church then had lunch

Went around the city shopping, window shopping, doing groceries

I Primer'd the walls = 3.5 hrs (painting by stairs, high foyers and vaulted ceilings can be a bitch)
Hoen cleaned the car = 3.5 hrs
9:15 pm we went biking (photo op! photo op!)

We came back an hour later only to realize I had forgotten to cook some rice. We looked like famished Cavemen.

Alert the media!

My husband is cleaning the car. My husband is cleaning the car. MY HUSBAND IS CLEANING THE CAR!!! Quick, alert the media!!!!

If this is a sign of the times, then pigs are going to be flying real soon!

Skillz on the Grill
Tuesday, June 12, 2007

No. I'm not talking about those annoying metallic things rappers glaze on their teeth.

Yesterday, we christened our grill. We decided
to take the healthy route so I grilled a Sock-eye Salmon. We have salmon at least twice a week but I always bake it. Grilling it was not that different and I'm happy I did well on that. You can rarely go wrong with salmon if you use the right juices anyway.

Today, w
e decided to take the not-so-healthy route. We decided to kabob. Beef, that is. Now I'm not a stranger to "sugba-ing" but I don't think I've ever used beef on them skewers before. So after half a day of marinating, it was time to skew the meat with the veggies. It made me miss home... and the smell of barbecue along the sides of the street. I told Joen that all we lack right now is some puso (hanging rice). I might have over-grilled a bit but hey, it was still yummy! And with a salad of fruits I chopped on the side, some wine and well, incidentally a UFC match in the background, it was a lovely dinner. I can't wait to show more of my skillz on the grill for that fill hopefully without a spill.

Diss-washer

So Cecil the Plumber (doesn't that just have a nice ring to it? Kinda like Larry the Cable Guy) came over yesterday with his son to check on our leaking dishwasher. He opened up the bottom, ran the thing and for the longest time, it wouldn't leak! But after chatting up a while longer some water did come out and it wasn't from the seal or the sides. It came from one of those wire-y things that came out from that thing and jutted out of that thing which made the whole thing quite complicated. The solution is to fix it but if we were going to have it fixed we might as well get a new one because it costs less than the labor it takes to repair.

So Joen calls Nancy, our agent, and tells her about the problem and if something can still be done about it from the seller's side since this was an existing pre-closing issue. Nothing yet as of today as their agent is yet to talk to them about it. Nevertheless, Joen was ready to get a new one and if they're willing to pay even just half for it, it would be ok with him. He's certain Nancy will help both ends come to some sort of arrangement. So "Adieu, Dishy Duke!" Come June 26th, your nemesis will take your place and rock you out of your world. I never got to know you but after 2 leaks, you and me just ain't workin'.

Status quo, status mo rin

You know what they say, Prime goes on.

Decked on

I LOVE breakfasts on the deck! With music, internet, the sun, and neighbors playing with their kids, lounging around with our friends langaw and batofway... mornings spent there are pretty nice. But pardon our mah jhong/card table. It's taking Joen one hundred years to decide which patio furniture to get. Hehe.

Water and mirrors
Monday, June 4, 2007

And the dishwasher problem is back. It just came back, TODAY. Time to call back the plumber and take care of this backjob!

Oh and I finally got the bagua mirror I ordered. I just hung it outside today. That should deflect all the bad chi coming in straight from the main road ahead of us... I hope.

Yung mga discoveries na talagang topak!

The other night, we got invited once again to Rani and Vangie's kids' birthday. Roni is 11 while Vaughn is 12. Last year, we were at Mahoney Park. This time, it was just at their house but the backyard was complete with water slides and such for the kids. Also, Rani had just finished his backyard gazebo and landscaping. It was nice seeing all our Pinoy friends all over again after not being around for quite a while.

We just realized that quite a handful of our friends live near us now, especially Joen's former roommate and ex-officemate, Fly and his wife, Sharon. Then there are the Hankins family of Alex and Elena with kids Alexis and AJ. Plus Noel and Amia as well as Michael and Joyce. The usual took place-- overeating of Filipino foods (I gobbled this really yummy dinuguan and downed the pandan cake), drinking for the guys, singing... terribly singing. Hehe. Yesterday, Sunday, we all met up at our new church now, St. Vincent de Paul. Very lovely church from the inside and out. Our old church, St. Leo, which I fell in love with, is just too far for us now. Good thing St. Vincent is what it is because I can see myself going there every Sunday to stare at the overhead organ and carry on with our "Where art thine speakers, O Lord! Mine eyes can't find them!" search. Seriously, no speakers in sight. But Hoen and I are on a hunt. Hehe.

Now that we know our friends are actually neighbors, we can drop by every so often. The only downside is that almost all of them are tagalog!

Me: Yes! Last Friday lang kami lumapit.
(Karen and Titit nod)
Joen: LUMIPAT. It's lumipat, not lumapit.
Karen: Lumapit na rin kasi nasa Bennington na kayo. O, diba?

How do you say it? Nakakahiya! Haha. Sige lang, I'll work on my Tagalog. And if I still suck, there's always english which is uhmm, the language of the very country we're all at.

I want to ride my BIIIIcycle. BIIIIcycle!

The conversation of getting bikes is almost 2 years in the running. Joen got this second hand Trek bike which he had been using quite a lot as a bachelor. Boom! I come in his life and he stops biking. This bike had been sitting on the apartment porch ever since I got to the US and it has literally rusted over. The tyres have gone bonkers too and just about everything about it screams "THROW ME AWAY." I told him to get a new bike but with my uterus problems then, he felt guilty pedaling on his own while leaving me behind to eat his dust while I await his return.

Finally, w
ith clearance from my OB GYN, we both got new bikes and tried them out for the first time yesterday. We didn't realize we had such a nice hood. We had 2 lakes nearby with LOVELY LOVELY trails. Since it was my first time to bike in say, OVER A DECADE, I had a pretty hard time pedaling up the steep roads. Thank God for our 4-days-a-week workouts, I might have broken a sweat but it didn't break my quads. I survived! Yippee! I'll take pictures next time. Hoen wants to get me a NON-GIRLY (phew!) basket to bring stuff in while we're out biking. One of those will be my camera of course! And water too. In the meantime, here are Mork and Mindy in our garage. Of course, I was sooo excited to bike out that I drove it with the manual tag still on. Bwahahaha!

Weather or not

Joen and I are at a sabbatical when it comes to putting things together for the house. The last thing we did for the house was assemble the grill we had just purchased a month ago. We opted for this Weber because it is not too big for the both of us and it's not too small either when we have guests over. This Weber ranked high in the Consumer Reports-- you know, that place where geeks go to MAKE SURE they buy good for the buck. (Joen goes to Consumer Reports for everything. Heck, he'd even go there if they had one for underwear, hehe). We don't have a gas tank yet so here is our beloved grill, sitting in our dining area, waiting to have some "heat."

By the
way, it's been raining in Omaha and Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind. It clouds over a lot but no rain, then the next thing you know it pours like hell. Then 10 minutes later the sun's out. It's driving us nuts! What EXACTLY do we wear?? Do we jacket up or tank down?? I just went to weather.com (which we love calling weatherornot.com) and it says ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS at 75F! (sans the exclamation point of course) but when I checked our mahiwagang weather reader/barometer, it's 81 degrees outside and sunny partly cloudy. Those clouds don't show a threat of rain at all. For the past weekend, we'd be driving and listening to the weather news on the radio. We look to our left and cotton puff clouds are looming adorably under the light blue sky. We look to our right and it looks like that scene from the Terminator where you just know bad things are about to happen. Ano ba talaga, Kuya? Ngerrr. As soon as the weather makes up its mind, with the help of our mahiwagang barometer, we will start grilling to our hearts' content. Cannot wait to see Senyor J on the grill. Mama will be proud.
